"Perhaps in imagining the Story’s end the theologians and the exegetes must become painters and singers, sculptors and poets, taking language to its end and then some as we attempt to articulate a better and more biblical hope than what we’ve often settled for."

There is a difference between fantasy, in the sense of simulated emotional highs crafted to satisfy the appetites of our desires, and imagination, which explores a created world in which joy and satisfaction are won by the adventures, work, trials, temptations, and effort of the characters. Imaginative films engage us by leading us through the pleasure of considering something that is other than ourselves. Fantasy films, in the sense of the word as Scruton uses it, disengage us by appealing to our appetites and desires and offering that which isn't real to temporarily sate them." An unliterary man may be defined as one who reads books once only ...  It is the quality of unexpectedness, not the fact that delights us. It is even better the second time. Knowing that the ‘surprise’ is coming we can now fully relish the fact that this path through the shrubbery doesn’t look as if it were suddenly going to bring us out on the edge of the cliff. So in literature. We do not enjoy a story fully at the first reading. Not till the curiosity, the sheer narrative lust, has been given its sop and laid asleep, are we at leisure to savour the real beauties. Till then, it is like wasting great wine on a ravenous natural thirst which merely wants cold wetness. The children understand this well when they ask for the same story over and over again."

Mark Galli schrijft in Christianity Today dat vasten hem niet geestelijker maakt (en verwijst daarbij naar de beperking van onze wilskracht): "Instead of the small thing helping me become faithful in the big thing, it just makes me focus more and more on the small thing. Fasting just reminds me how little I love God and how seldom I live according to his ways ...  What my Lenten successes have done more than anything else is inculcate pride and self-righteousness. Spiritually speaking, that's one step forward and two steps back." Het vasten eindigt namelijk op Paaszondag: "Easter doesn't become a day when I thank God that he has made me more disciplined, not like those non-liturgical folks who don't even observe Lent. Instead, it becomes an occasion to celebrate the fact that my self-respect does not hinge on my self-discipline, and that my very lack of discipline is the paradoxical sign of the gospel. Indeed, while we were gluttons and prayerless, while we didn't give a rip about the poor, Christ died for us. It's not for the spiritually fit and healthy that he came, but for the unfit and unhealthy."

"Habits aren’t destiny — they can be ignored, changed or replaced. But it’s also true that once the loop is established and a habit emerges, your brain stops fully participating in decision-making. So unless you deliberately fight a habit — unless you find new cues and rewards — the old pattern will unfold automatically." "A Christian might see it as further confirmation that we are the object of life’s ups and downs, rather than their subject, that perhaps it’s no coincidence that the Good News addresses those who can’t/don’t bring anything ‘to the table,’ and for whom Hope must take an external form if it’s to be of any lasting comfort."
